GSI Outdoor Java Press

this is a replacement for an older GSI press that finally cracked after 5 years of Boy Scout camping. Getting rid of the plastic handle makes this version A LOT easier to pack. The new press screen seems a lot sturdier too. And best of all… no more grounds either in the coffee or blocking the pour screen. In fact, the new press is so good they were able to get rid of the little screen that used to be in the pour spout.

Feature

Nothing helps you shrug off the morning fuzz like a hot cup of joe, and thanks to the GSI Java Press, you can get your fix everywhere from a backcountry campsite to the ski area parking lot. This French press mug features a split-ring plunger to keep grounds out of your cup and a insulating EVA sleeve to hold in heat while the magic brews. The lightweight, BPA-free, and shatter-resistant material holds up to years of life outdoors.

NEW CUSCUS 6200ci Internal Frame Hiking Camp Travel Backpack – Red

As an Assistant Scout Master on a tight budget, I was looking for a good, large backpack at a really good price. After reviewing A LOT of backpacks, I found that Cuscus was generally well recommended and generally well priced. Our Troop is working on their Backpacking Merit Badge and we will be doing 3, 15+ mile, two night hikes and one 50+ mile, 6 night hike in the comming year.
This pack and I (and 11 Scouts) survived our first trip with flying colors. It had plenty of room for all my stuff, (gear, food, water) and was pretty comfortable. It might be a little short on waist belt padding (or I’m a little too heavy on it!). I have no doubt that I’ll have enough room for our weeklong trip in June.
The only “cons” I had was that it doesn’t come with a rain cover and although there are 3 huge exterior pockets, you can’t see in them (no mesh) and there are no chain/loops for hanging anything on the outside.
Overall, I think I got excellent value for my money.

Feature

  • Multiday mountaineering pack with 88-liter (6,200-cubic-inch) capacity
  • Large main compartment with top and bottom access; water-resistant PVC coating
  • 2 side zippered pockets, 1 front zippered pocket, and top lid pocket
  • Heavily padded back panel, shoulder straps, and waist straps
  • Separate sleeping bag compartment; side compression straps; weighs 5.5 pounds

Overview

Made of Polyester with total 5 pockets. Top lid pocket for compass, maps, small essentials or raingear. One large front zippered pocket. Two large zippered side pockets. A separate sleeping bag compartment with detachable divider from main compartment with easy access. Extra webbing holders for attaching additional gear to outside of pack. Many tightening straps with buckles for securing the backpack. PVC coated internal provides excellent water protection. Fits torso: 15 – 21.5 inches. Fits waist/hip: 30 – 59 inches. BRAND NEW.

Century 7035I Portable Propane Mighty-Lite Matchless Single Mantle Lantern

I have had several Century products and lanterns over the years. All work well, and I like their stuff. This lantern is a little better then the previous similar product in a couple ways. One is the cage that goes around the glass is a little stronger, thicker, and the whole assembly seems a little more solid then the previous lantern I owned, and was stolen out of my tent – [...]! My previous lantern was on a small propane tank (not 16 oz type) which had it’s own valve. I’m not sure, but this one might leak a very little when turned off. I turned it off a little tighter, and now it doesn’t seem to leak, but the valve isn’t as precise as my last one, with the turn off position a little “soft”. For long term storage, I’d take the 16 oz bottle off. For a week of camping, no one would even notice. Also, hooked to a bigger tank, no one would notice, and you could turn the valve off anyway if you care. I thought the self lighter would be convienient, but so far I’m wrong on that one. The piezzo element doesn’t fire, if the globe is filled with propane-it needs oxygen to fire. So, you have to keep snapping the thing before you turn on the valve, and hope it catches before the globe fills with propane. Its easier to just let the globe fill with propane, and use a lighter. Plus, the piezzo lighter could possibly interfere with the mantle. You have to be more carefull putting on the mantle, so that the piezzo element doesn’t poke into the mantle when putting a new one on. All in all, I like the light, but probably would have preferred the non-piezzo one a little better (I could just cut the thing off, or bend it out of the way). The single lanterns burn 1/2 the amount of propane as the doubles, are lighter and smaller, replacement globes are cheaper, you only need to replace one mantle if it breaks, and they give off plenty of light for playing guitar by the camp fire, etc (if the fire is down to coals, etc). I normally use a headlight for reading at night (the Garity one is real bright, and has several settings, and batteries last forever – I couldn’t recommend it higher). All in all, this is a great lantern, and I recommend it to anyone who is going camping.

Feature

  • Features push-button piezo igniter for match-free lighting
  • Compact, easy to carry; made for cold-weather performance
  • Includes chain so it can be hung as well as set on flat surface
  • Adjusts from dim to bright; quiet, soot-free, non-flickering operation
  • Base accommodates 16.4-ounce propane cylinder (not included)

Overview

Century Matchless “Mighty-Lite” Single Mantle Propane Lantern is regulated for the best cold weather performance. Fast push-button start ¿ no matches needed! Its compact and easy to use with carry-chain handle. Adjustable light from bright to dim and uses the standard 16.4oz propane cylinder (not included). A quality feature of the “Mighty Lite” lantern, it utilizes easy-to-use Slip-On (double tie) or Slip-On “Quick Clip” mantles for durability. Quiet, soot-free and non-flickering and durable, weather-resistant construction makes this one handy lantern. Perfect for emergency light situations.

Coleman Fold and Go Camp Pillow (Small, Colors May Vary)

I bought two of these pillows for a cub scout camping trip my son and I were going on. I wasnt sure how great they would be since they were very reasonable priced but I thought I would give them a try. I was very impressed. They fold up nicely and fit into many small places or when you dont have alot of room in your duffel bag. It was much better than not having any pillow at all however due to the nature of being a folding, camp pillow it is a little on the thin side, however if you fold it in half it works just fine. I dont plan on ever going camping without my new camping pillow ever again.

Feature

  • Pillow folds in half for compact transport
  • Unfolds to 12” x 20”
  • Made of poly/cotton with cotton-flannel cover
  • Great for travel and camping
  • Colors and patterns may vary

Overview

Convenient and comfortable, the Coleman Fold ‘N’ Go Camp Pillow folds in half for compact packing and transport. Unfolded, it measures 12″x20″. Made of poly/cotton with a cozy cotton-flannel cover, the Fold ‘N’ Go Camp Pillow is a great choice for travel and camping.

Eureka Grand Manan 7 Tent

I bought the Grand Manan 7 to replace an old Coleman tent and just recently took it out for a 3 night camping trip in Tillamook. The setup of this tent is pretty straight forward with a color coded part that helps you orient the rainfly correctly. I was very impressed with how well this tent breathed – way less moisture than the Coleman I had. Having said that, there are some things that you should be aware of:

1. Seam sealing the rainfly is a must at the very least, be prepared to do that *before* you go camping.

2. The instructions are a little weak, so if you haven’t setup your fair share of tents, it might be a little difficult.

3. The poles provided are not those nice seamless joint ones making it sort of a chore to thread them through the mesh channels – this is the only reason why the tent gets a 4/5 instead of 5/5.

Hope this helps.

Feature

  • Durable, shockcorded, freestanding frame is constructed of fiberglass.
  • Full coverage fly rolls up to allow maximum cool air flow to the interior via low mesh vents.
  • 2 twin-rack, side opening doors provide fast entry and exit.
  • Features hanging loops and interior pockets.
  • Roof vents in the tent and fly provides ample air flow to the interior.

Overview

You’ll be untra-comfortable inside our new Grand Manan 7. With straight lower walls to maximize interior space and a roll up fly for 4-way ventilation this is an ideal 3 person, 3 season tent. Floor size is 7′X6′ with a 4′ 3″ center with 2 doors and 4 windows. There is 21% more headroom than a standard 2-pole dome and 16% more volume with our strainght wall design.
